Mary Elizabeth and Derek met when they were introduced by her grandmother and dated for four and a half years before getting engaged. The pair went on a vacation to Mexico with a small group of friends. Halfway through the trip they were taking pictures before dinner. It was almost sunset and Derek proposed on the dock overlooking the ocean and even had a professional photographer there to capture the special moment.
The couple’s January wedding at 21 Main Events at North Beach was shot by Hannah Ruth Photography and featured an old Hollywood/New York meets the South theme. The day was classy yet simple. Champagne flowed and Frank Sinatra played in the background while every man was clad in a full tux. Mary Elizabeth and Derek wanted to have the feel that weddings and parties used to have with everyone dressed to the nines, dancing and laughing. The bride wore a custom cut gown by Kenneth Winston with a light gold lining and ivory overlay of baroque lace, while the groom donned a traditional black tuxedo accented with a white bowtie and vest. The groomsmen wore matching tuxes, as did the “Man of Honor,” Mary Elizabeth’s brother, John. The bridesmaids all wore long black one-shoulder dresses with a sexy slit on the side.
The couple tried to add as many personal touches as possible. The photo booth was a huge hit with all ages, as was the ice cream bar, which was the bride’s personal favorite. Instead of a traditional guestbook they opted for a “book frame”—a hollow frame with wooden hearts for guests to sign and drop back into the frame. Their gift to their guests was miniature honey jars with their names and wedding date. “Our love is sweet and we wanted to share it with our guests,” said Mary Elizabeth.
